The Cote de Beaute comprises 70 km of shoreline alternating between beaches of fine sand and rocky coasts and includes some of Europe’s finest Blue Flag sandy beaches like the 2km beach at Royan.
Along the coast are dunes and numerous creeks or little bays nestling amongst the rocks. In the calm waters of the estuary or in the breakers of the Atlantic, you will enjoy the pleasures and activities of the beach.
St-Georges de Didonne has a beautiful beach which is quite protected. Here you can sunbathe or swim, and when the tide is out explore the rock pools for all sorts of marine life. This beach is also a naturist area so it may not be suitable for everyone.
Sailing and windsurfing are available at Royan and Ile d’Oleron. Boat trips and rentals are available at the coast and also on the rivers where you can take a pleasure boat trip on the Charente river or hire a canoe.

Cycling, Walking and Bird Watching

You can bring your own cycles or hire them locally at Gemozac to explore the area in the quiet, winding lanes and roads surrounded by vineyards and fields of sunflowers. Dedicated cycle tracks are found at St Palais-sur Mer which goes through the forest and along the coast.
Walkers and “Twitchers alike will be treated to the sight of numerous birds circling around Beaurepaire including cuckoos, buzzards, goshawks, herons, flycatchers, black redstarts, hoopoes and many others. You may wish to visit the 70 hectare ecological lagoon at Rochefort which is frequented by thousands of birds.
